It is easy to stay focused on the security of your sites, your data, your domains but it is important to remember that, in this interconnected world we call the interwebs, you are only as strong as your weakest point. Choose your partners carefully.
The latest Craigslist attack was not attacking Craigslist’s servers, but the Domain Name Servers (DNS). These machines are responsible for telling other computers where to find a particular computer on the network. In this attack, the hackers were able to tell the DNS machines, “when someone wants to get to Craigslist, send them here”. Imagine someone building a fake door in front of your favorite coffee shop, which sends you down a hallway to a dark alley where bad things happen. Yeah, that’s bad.
